A Dairy Equipment (DE) product contains no dairy ingredients, but was manufactured on equipment also used to produce dairy products — without the equipment being kashered (re-koshered) in between.
In halachic terms, a DE product has absorbed only a secondary dairy flavor (nosein ta'am bar nosein ta'am), which is treated differently from a product that directly contains dairy.
Ashkenazim may eat DE products after meat without waiting, but not together with meat at the same meal. Sephardim generally treat DE products as fully pareve.
Many products are certified OU-D yet contain no dairy ingredients. Some of these have been confirmed by the OU to be Dairy Equipment — they appear in this database marked as OU-D*. Because their DE status is not reflected in their symbol, it should be reconfirmed periodically, as it may change without notice.
